The NASA administrator who named the telescope in 2002 said that he was unaware of any evidence that Webb was responsible for the Lavender Scare, as the period was called. More than 1200 individuals signed a petition requesting a name change. In March, four astronomers wrote an essay in Scientific American calling for the telescope to be named something different, citing James Webb’s position as a government administrator during a period when thousands of gay men and women lost their government jobs as potential security risks. The lead up to the telescope’s launch hasn’t been without controversy. If everything goes as planned, Webb will take its first science-quality images three months after launching, and three months after that begin routine operation. After that unfurling, over the course of several months, scientists will check the optics and telescope alignment, and then calibrate all of the instruments. Varied other parts-including a near infrared camera an 18-segment, 21.3-foot, hexagonal gold and beryllium mirror and an elaborate five-layer, tennis-court-sized Kapton shield that will block heat and light from the sun, Earth and moon-will all hopefully move into place in a multi-step display of metallic origami, creating an angular, high-tech object weighing more than 13,000 pounds. Just 30 minutes after launch a solar array will unfold and two hours later a high gain antenna will deploy. Anxious scientists will have to watch from Earth as their creation unfolds over its 30-day, one-million-mile journey to the spot beyond the moon where it will orbit the sun. Webb will help scientists understand how early galaxies formed and grew, detect possible signatures of life on other planets, watch the birth of stars, study black holes from a different angle, and likely discover unexpected truths.īut Webb’s deployment isn’t without risks. "Webb can reach that kind of sensitivity limit in seven or eight hours."Īs reporter Shi en Kim reported for Smithsonian magazine earlier this year, the telescope is an astronomical Swiss Army knife of sorts, with-when all of its tools are clicked open in space-the ability to study a host of new things about the universe. "Some of the deep field work that Hubble has done, they would look in a particular field for a couple of weeks," Randy Kimble, a project scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope, told. While Hubble can see back 400 million years after the Big Bang, Webb can possibly look back 100 million years after the event. Scientists built the telescope to see in infrared and it can look further into space, and thus further back in time, than anything previously constructed. The James Webb Telescope has a mirror roughly six times the collecting size of Hubble’s-and it is 100 times more sensitive. The telescope’s "spectacular images have captured the imagination for decades, and will continue to inspire humanity for years to come," said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for science at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C., in a statement. The Hubble launched into low-Earth orbit in 1990 and in the three decades since has been sending stunning images of stars and galaxies unlike anything seen before. The cooperative project between the space agencies of the United States, Canada and Europe will be able to do things its famed predecessor, the Hubble Space Telescope, couldn't. “I truly see JWST as one such monument of our times.” “Remarkable enduring achievements of human hand and mind, be it the temples of Mahabalipuram, the pyramids of Giza, the Great Wall or the Sistine Chapel have all taken time and expense,” Priyamvada Natarajan, an astrophysicist at Yale, told the New York Times. But scientists say the investment in time and money will be worth the wait and cost, if the craft performs as expected. And this year alone, the telescope was delayed several times. House of Representatives even threatened to cancel the craft. More than a decade has passed since the telescope was first expected to launch, a delay accompanied by an escalating price tag that soared roughly $9 billion above budget. The Christmas gift to the world will ditch its box and open up slowly on its own during a multi-step, month-long journey to its orbit in outer space. ET the James Webb Space Telescope, a scientific gift folded up and wrapped in a rocket, took off from its launch site in the South American country of French Guiana. In an incremental sign the universe rewards the diligent behavior and patience of astronomers out to study it, conditions cleared enough this Christmas morning for the launch of the biggest, most powerful and most expensive telescope ever.

Even if I set the setup low and take limp shocks and springs, nothing happens. There is no hard landing, no hitting the metal of the car's floor plate. No matter how high the jump, in WRC 10 the car is always caught gently. a second weakness of the physics I observe with jumps. If anything, I think Asphalt tyres are still a little bit too grippy to my taste, despite the other thinks that asphalt physics in this game is superior to DR. Therefore I don't really think that driving with Gravel tyres in Asphalt feel the same as driving Asphalt with Asphalt tyres, because it is not the same suspension. longer suspension travel) with a different suspension preset to begin with. We are talking about a higher profile tyres, different suspension structure that is more suitable for gravel (e.g. Here is the thing: Switching from Asphalt to Gravel tyre set is not only a change of tyre compound, but a complete suspension change. Yes I know, you hardly notice the difference). Visually, it is easy to observe that everything works properly, but the effects in physics (especially on gravel) are weak, resembling a placebo. Even after adjusting the differentials of a 4WD. Too little difference is noticeable in the drive mode. In my world of physics, such a setting leads to loss of grip where the wheels don't move out fast enough and briefly lack contact with the ground, and loss of grip where, after multiple compressions in quick succession, the car settles on its metal floor plate. However, I am not the only one who prefers to set the rebound firmer/slower, because Kylotonn is very cautious about the disadvantages of setting it too firm. In WRC 8/9/10 the simulation of the shock absorbers is much better. In Dirt Rally 2.0 I only set springs and height, I ignore the settings for the shocks. If you skid, it's because of the suspension rebound, or your own clumsiness, but not because it went "plop". It doesn't matter in the physics of the game, there is no effect on the driving behavior. For WRC 10, Kylotonn only added a "plop" sound effect (always comes a quarter of a second too early, unfortunately), but it's fake. So why not the other way around? Driving with gravel tires from gravel to asphalt, I expect an improvement in grip and less tendency to drift.Ģ. When I play the test track in WRC 10 and drive on gravel with asphalt tires, (which is of course slippery) I immediately get believable gravel physics. WRC 8 has poor gravel physics that are more like asphalt physics with less grip, but if you have to drive asphalt stages with gravel tires, it fits much better for that. I'm not a rally driver, but in my mind it should drive more like ordinary asphalt physics with less grip than asphalt tires provide, perhaps similar to wet asphalt. The car drifts and steers through all the corners just as if you were driving on a layer of sand. It drives like on gravel with the only difference that the vibrations are different. But one thing has gotten worse and others have remained bad. In WRC 10 it is identical, at least as good anyway. In general, the gravel physics have changed since WRC 9, and in my eyes, have improved greatly. But let's get to the weaknesses of the physics. and the delay/lag at the throttle, WRC 10 not only shines with asphylt physics, it does a lot better than Dirt Rally 2.0. I wanted the car to sit as evenly and level as possible so I did bring the fronts up to match the rears.Despite the poor gamepad control with too slow steering movement.ĭR2 vs WRC8 Steering issue for controller users XBOX ONE There's about 5/8" of lowering left in the front struts but I could not get the rears to go any lower. Ī couple more items planned for the build is an AP Racing BBK and SS-Tuning fender flares. Just trying a new direction, mainly just for fun. This won't be a true R2 or R5 build, but it has definitely inspired the choices I'm making with the car right now. Indeed this is the R5 wing Ron had for sale. I already have some new Michelin 4S tires on hand for summer. I'm planning to buy another set of 17s for summer, maybe another set of the WRCs but I'm considering other options. After the first 70 episodes, things begin to get lot more interesting really fast. The main strength of the series is its characters, who drive the plot (which we will discuss in detail later). Now that we got the flaws out of the way, let's talk positives. Once the series kicks it into high gear around 70th episode, it mostly manages to keep that pace up. But even then some of these episodes might be below par for your taste. If you're into characters chilling down and wasting a lot of time, this may sit well with you. This is mainly only an issue at the start of the series. Aside from what I've said above, even some of the non-filler episodes are very slow paced. The fact that filler can't move the plot along fuels the second big flaw. Some of the filler episodes can be genuinely enjoyable but those are few and far between. This is worsened by the below par writing for these filler episode as they are not written by the original author Masashi Kishimoto himself. So mostly what we get is poorly written mini-arcs and episodes that don’t affect any of the characters or the world in any significant way. This being a mainly character driven plot, this becomes a huge issue because any significant event in fillers could affect the characters so they can't move ahead the plot line at all. The issues that lies within the filler episodes is that they are not allowed to make any significant changes to the story or specifically its characters. It counts as 219 total filler episodes which make up 44% of the series as a whole. The amount of filler in this show is staggering. The story is mainly hampered (not ruined) by fillers and pacing issues which I will discuss below. Down the line this is series deals with more mature themes and darker tones and manage to execute well on most of those themes if not all. And the story then on is presented in a collection of long well constructed story arcs with the bigger picture stories of Sasuke and the Akatsuki being told parallelly till a certain point. The series eases you back into the world of Naruto with a slow paced, almost SOL like first few episodes. It starts off where the first part of Naruto ended and the very first scenes gives us a sneak peak of things to come. It's unpredictable, it's thrilling, it plays with your emotions, it's funny, it's tragic, it's sometimes downright frustrating but it is, more than anything, wondrous and fun while being able to take itself seriously when it needs to. But what it is, is beautiful (probably not the word that can be often used to describe a shounen anime), but it really is. While it's not bad, it's certainly no Berserk. The story of Naruto has been a mixed bag. been the best experience an anime gave me in my entire life and dig into what made the series popular while also explaining its flaws. Sometimes the animation quality was below par and pacing can be painfully slow at times. Let me start off by saying Naruto is by no means a flawless anime. An anime that ranked as one of the most watched series in Japan that got tarnished by a greedy studio and has received tons of internet backlash throughout the years.
